1st Technical Workshop on CN-EU Fusion Collaboration Held in Chengdu

1st Technical Workshop on CN-EU Fusion Collaboration was Held in Chengdu on 23rd January, at the event of which nearly 20 Chinese and European fusion research institutions' representatives gathered to discuss the cooperation plan.

The 'CN-EU Technical Management Plan (TMP)' was signed on the 6th meeting of Fusion Sub-Committee (FU-6) under the Framework of CN-EU R&D Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy, aiming to promote the 'Fusion Research Work Programme 2013-2020' through feasible programs: joint design of CFETR and European DEMO (material test, breeding blanket design, system integration, plasma configuration, safety and social economics, etc.), joint operation among existing research facilities supporting ITER operation, joint PhD and Masters program and so on.

During the 4-day meeting, representative from both sides gave more than 30 technical reports, discussed in groups divided by TMP and drew up the next-phase CN-EU fusion cooperation plan to be reported to Fusion Sub-Committee.

The cooperation between SIno-French Fusion Energy centeR members were highlighted on the meeting. From IRFM, Dr. Tuong HOANG presented the scenario modelling for HL-2A and HL-2M jointly developed by IRFM and SWIP. From SWIP, Dr. Xinyu BAI reported the results from the joint experiments on HL-2A, namely the results with the LHCD PAM launcher, while Dr. Yipo ZHANG's presentation focused on ELM-mitigation with impurity injection and status of the new hard X-ray camera for HL-2A. From ASIPP, Dr. Qiang LI talked about the development of W/Cu PFCs for EAST and WEST, Dr. Miaohui LI gave a report on LHCD experiments in EAST, which have resulted in 100 s long H-mode discharges, and Dr. Ling ZHANG reported on the impurity behavior during the long pulse H-modes. In addition, presentations were given by the two IRFM PhD-students who are funded by EUROfusion for the CN-EU collaboration. They are Guillaume URBANCZYK's report on Interaction of high power RF waves with the scrape-off layer plasma in EAST and WEST, and Alex GROSJEAN's report on Impact of the geometry and shaping of the plasma facing components on the hot spot generation.

During the breakout sessions, the physics & technology of long pulse operation, relevant heating & current drive systems and diagnostics were discussed as one of the topics. Dr. Annika EKEDAHL (IRFM) gave an introduction and a summary for this topic.

More than 70 representatives attended the meeting, most of which came from China International Nuclear Fusion Energy Program Execution Center (ITER CHINA), Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP), Institute of Plasma Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP), Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences (INEST), China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Sichuan University, European Consortium for the Development of Fusion Energy (EUROfusion), Culham Center  for Fusion Energy (CCFE), French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP), Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH (FZJ), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and National Agency for Atomic Energy (ENEA), etc.
