China-EU Introduction

Agreement between the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) and the Government of the People’s Republic of China for R&D Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy (PUNE) entered into effect since 2008. So far, four subcommittees have been established under this Agreement:

Subcommittee CAEA - JRC on “Nuclear Security & Safeguards”

Subcommittee CAEA - RTD on “Fission Coordinated Actions” (draft Rules of Procedure)

Subcommittee MOST - EURATOM (RTD) on “Fusion Energy Research”

Subcommittee JRC - NNSA on “Nuclear Safety”

Further to ITER, Cooperation on fusion energy research between China and EURATOM was:

About twelve consolidated collaborative activities between Chinese entities and EU fusion associations;

Potential Chinese partnership in the programme of operation and exploitation of the Joint European Torus (JET);

Chinese participation at the STAC WG for the assessment of JET feasibility studies "ECRH system for H&CD and NTM control“ & “ELM control RMP Coils” (Culham, 8-9 June 2010);

Setting-up of a bilateral Joint WG on JET under discussion;

Planned technical discussions in the margings of the IAEA-FEC in Daejeon (Rep.Korea) in October 2010;

Completion of common efforts to agree on specific Fusion related implementing Agreement between MOST and EU under PUNE;

Establishment of specific Steering Committee of MOST-EURATOM.

First Meeting of the RTD-MOST Subcommittee on Fusion Energy Research (FU-1) was held at Culham (United Kingdom) on 12 April 2012. Delegates from MOST, ASIPP of China attended the meeting while The EURATOM membership for the FU-1 meeting was from EC RTD and IPP, Garching (Germany).


Second Meeting of the RTD-MOST Subcommittee on Fusion Energy Research (FU-2) was held in San Diegoon 9 October, 2012 during IAEA FEC meeting. Delegates from MOST, ASIPP and SWIP of China attended the meeting while The EURATOM membership for the FU-1 meeting was from EC RTD and IPP, Garching (Germany), Culham, ENEA, Frascati (Italy), CEA, Cadarache (France), and Swiss Conf., Lausanne.
