SIFFER Introduction

Sino-French Fusion Energy Center (SIFFER) was jointly established by the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of China in November, 2017 to further promote bilateral cooperation on fusion energy research.

The purpose of SIFFER is to, through cooperation, offer support to International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Organization (ITER IO) and its partners, develop fusion components and technologies, conduct experimental physics research, develop safety code and technical standard for fusion energy and prepare for next-step device.

The members who conduct cooperation under SIFFER include Institute for Magnetic Fusion Research (IRFM), China International Nuclear Fusion Energy Program Execution Center (ITER-CHINA), Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP) and Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP).

SIFFER's establishment is based on more than 20 years' tradition of collaboration between China and France in the field of Fusion. Associated laboratories ASIPP-IRFM and SWIP-IRFM have carried out common mid and long-term projects of Science and Technology to support ITER and China/France Fusion Energy research programs. Remarkable achievements have been made in plasma heating system, robots for fusion, high heat flux components, joint experiments, etc.
